India of Bapu's Dream

This is what Bapu Said, let us thinks and rethinks, is it not equally relevant today? Village Swaraj - Bapu said
"My idea of village Swaraj is that it is a complete republic, independent of its neighbors for its own vita wants and yet interdependent for many others in which dependence is necessary. Thus, every village's first concern will be to grow its own food crops, and cotton for its cloth. It should have a reserve for its cattle, recreation and playground for adults and children. It will have its own waterworks ensuring clean water supply. This can be done through controlled wells or tanks. Education will be compulsory up to the final basic course. As far as possible, every activity will be conducted on the co-operative basis. There will be no castes such as we have today with their graded un-touchability. Non-violence with its technique of Satyagraha and non-co-operation will be the sanction of the village community. There will be a compulsory service of village guards who will be selected by rotation from the register maintained by the village."

Food is basic necessity and we have witnessed exorbitant increases of food prices year up to 2008. This can be attributed to global futures and commodities market, their manipulation of market needs and shameless statements of a President of one of the big economies that "India and China is consuming more and therefore price rise".

But statistics says otherwise. India consumes on average 320 KG per capita per annum, an increase from 270 five years ago, but the USA consumes 1070 Kg per capita per annum, an increase from 780 kg five years ago. The reality is that the so called free economies and their financial institutions have played the international market and through their betting has given rise to the price of commodities and oil. This is simply unsustainable. The behavior of players in the "open" market must be controlled and effectively regulated and delivery of the commodities must be made compulsory to manage the market in ethical way.

The second issue is managing the production of food and basic necessities in sustainable way. This can onlybe made possible by professional management and training of local villagers in managing their resources in best possible and sustainable way. We will provide this to our villages to become self sustainable in their growth and developments where justice and peace will prevail.
